Art Classes for Children – Senior Level

Senior level art classes give advanced primary and early high school students the skills to "see and be" like an artist, refining and extending their drawing and painting while developing right brain cognitive abilities.

In this class, students will work to continue developing their drawing and painting skills through a variety of exercises tailored to this age group. Fresh term topics ensure students remain engaged and are constantly introduced to new themes, techniques, mediums and artists.

Each term we develop fresh lesson plans around an exciting new topic. By presenting techniques and artistic styles in the context of a famous art movement or artist, a new topic each term boosts interest, accelerates learning, and makes every class feel exciting and purposeful. The 2026 Term 3 topic is Mexican Modernism — The Artists who Painted a Revolution, exploring the work of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, María Izquierdo and Rufino Tamayo.

Students also learn directly from the masters — analysing key works, breaking down core techniques and building a major term piece inspired by one selected master such as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani or Paul Cézanne. Skills covered include observational drawing and accurate rendering, expressive brushwork and impasto, stylised form and figure composition, structural and geometric planning, colour theory, and full project execution from thumbnails to finished canvas.

Classes run for 9 consecutive weeks, starting the same week as NSW public school terms. For classes that fall on NSW public holidays an additional week is added so students receive a total of 9 classes. Students are recommended to purchase the Sydney Art School Student Resource Kit, or bring their own quality paints, brushes and an A3 visual art diary; canvas, high quality paper, palettes and water jars are provided.

Classes are available in studios at Hornsby, Baulkham Hills and Epping. Due to high demand trial classes are not offered and places are limited, so early enrolment is recommended.
