Makertime For Families Workshop

Do you want to come and learn in our makerspace at Darling Square Library with your children? Join this 2-hour session to get hands-on experience with our maker kits, microscopes, marble-run, wind-tube, electronics and robotics kits.

Our October session focuses on Halloween fun designing and making a scary Sphero robot maze! We will collaborate to build an obstacle course and navigate it using fun, block-based coding. Our facilitators will guide your child as they explore the exciting world of robotics.

Each month, we’ll introduce you to a series of fun projects designed to develop your creative thinking skills. You could learn some basic coding to use a Sphero robot, or build simple circuits. Explore our Little Bits wall or complete a basic laser cutting project by etching a design onto plywood or acrylic. Each monthly Makertime for families workshop offers different activities over the 2-hour session.

Please note: while these activities vary each month, we do repeat some activities.

What you’ll learn:

• STEM, robotics and coding skills
• Core digital fabrication skills: 3D design, 3D printing, graphic design, laser cutting
• How to use open-source software like for simple design projects
• A range of maker activities including electronics, physical computing and hands-on creativity
• How to use makerspace tools and equipment with support from experienced facilitators

What you’ll have access to:

• Tools and resources: 3D printers, laser cutter, electronics components, craft supplies and STEM kits – all materials provided
• Devices: high-powered laptops and iPads
• Robotics and electronics kits: Makey Makey, Ozobot, Sphero, Edison, Little Bits
• 3D prints limited to 30 minutes per student
• Laser cut projects limited to materials 10cm x 10cm

What to bring:

Each participant will need to bring a USB if they wish to save a copy of their own work.

• Cost: $15 for each child (accompanying adults are free)
• Experience level: no prior making experience required

We think carefully about the suggested age range for our activities and this workshop is only appropriate for children over the age of 8 years.
